The 1950 edition of the Smethport High School Track Team, coached by Frank Rugh and Norm Zwald, compiled a mediocre record. The Orange and Black cindermen took one first and four third places during the regular team season.

The Hubbers opened in a meet with Portville High and swamped the York Staters, 78 to 26. The victors took 8 first, 10 second, and 7 third places. The Panthers came out on the short end with 4 firsts, one second, and 3 thirds.

The following week Smethport finished low man in a triangular competition with Kane, which came in first, and Port Allegany. The final tally showed Kane 64 1/2, Port 44 1/2, and the County-seaters 39.

Then on a wind-swept track the Hub Tracksters were nosed out by four points in another Saturday three way classic. The results placed Port Allegany first with 51 credits, Ridgway second with 50, and last, but close behind, the locals with 47.

On Wednesday, the Hubbers traveled to Lock Haven to participate in the annual Lock Haven Relays. Included in the entries with Smethport highjumpers and mile, half-mile, and medley relay runners. The half-mile, consisting of Bill Youkers, Don Ross, Allen Mayer, and Louie Marquardt, turned in the best performance of the day as they took first with a time of 1:42.1. Ron Johnson and Court Howe made a one-two sweep of the high jump, and the medley relayers placed third.

In the County Meet, held annually in Smethport, the hosts finished third; first place was won by Bradford and second by Kane, and fourth by Port Allegany.

The Hub cindermen then entered P.I.A.A. competition in the form of the District 9 Meet at Bradford. They completed the day's activities in third position. The teams entered and their final standings were: Kane 62 1/2, Johnsonburg 43 1/2, Smethport 39, Port Allegany 23 1/2, Ridgway 21, Clarion 10 1/2.

The boys who journeyed to Penn State for a try at all-state recognition were: Court Howe (discus), "Butch" Covert (shotput), Ron Johnson (broad and high jump), Bill Youkers and Cliff Thomas (200 yard low hurdles) and the one-half mile relay team. None of the local contestants finished in the top five.
